HOW TO RECOGNIZE PLAQUE

Dental plaque or biofilm is a mass of microbes that builds up on the teeth. This bacterial biofilm causes gingivitis and dental cavities.

GINGIVITIS
Gingivitis is a gum disease that causes inflammation in periodontal ligaments. The symptoms are swollen, tender and bright red gums. The gums may bleed when teeth are brushed.
Saliva may harden plaque to tartar, if the plaque stays on the surface of teeth for long enough period of time.
Plaque should be removed by mechanical cleaning - brushing teeth and flossing.

CHECKING INCISORS
Public health nurse can check the cleaness of the teeth by lifting up the upper lip.
A child should be directed to dental care if there is a heavy plaque layer on the teeth. A lot of plaque usually refers to bad oral health habits.
